STRESS MANAGEMENT WITH FLOWERS written by Liza Roeser person in a sunflower field How many of you have felt like you’ve been involuntarily on a wild roller coaster the last few weeks? The world has gone into a collective social isolation. Some of us are now homeschooling our children and balancing work. It’s harder than ever to not let the stress reside hand in hand with us throughout the day. On my Instagram this week, I launched a dialogue about stress awareness. April is National Stress Awareness Month, so I wanted to dedicate a full week with my followers to dive deep into the discussion of stress and how we can alleviate it. As a business owner, mother, and human, I want to seek out how I can help myself, but also help others manage their stress. Take a look at these three studies shared by the Society of American Florists, where University researchers proved the potent effect of flowers and how they treat stress. Flowers in Your Home Can Reduce Stress The first study I read comes from the University of North Florida. Their findings show that “people who lived with flowers in their homes for just a few days reported a significant decrease in their levels of stress and improvements in their moods.” This is a fact I have felt for many years, and seeing it scientifically proven gives me butterflies. Their study also concluded that for women, keeping flowers in the home or receiving them as a gift reduced their stress levels. Spreading Positivity Within the Senior Community The second study I found was Rutgers: Flowers Boost Seniors’ Well Being. This is an exciting study to share because, at the beginning of April, my FiftyFlowers team and I safely gifted the seniors at a local apartment complex several Easter-themed bouquets. The smiles and gratitude prove what Rutgers found, which is “the health effects of flowers on senior citizens, demonstrates that flowers ease depression, inspire social networking and refresh memory as we age.” I also found in their research that upon receiving flowers, 81% reported they felt less depressed. Benefits of Receiving and Sharing the Space With Fresh Cut Flowers The third and last study I read was from the Home Ecology of Flowers Study at Harvard. Through her research, Nancy Etcoff, Ph.D., found three amazing findings of the human mind and when they receive or share space with fresh cut flowers. 1. Flowers Feed Compassion. 2. Flowers chase away the blues, and anxieties at home. 3. Living with flowers can provide a boost of energy, happiness and enthusiasm at work. This is exciting to read as I know many of us are sheltering in place in our homes, and this research proves how flowers can directly help us through this world crisis. After reading these articles, and being involved first hand with such an amazing product, it delights me to know that the work I do can help reduce stress. It’s an emotion all of us will feel at one time or another, and it motivates me to steer FiftyFlowers in a direction that can make flowers more accessible and affordable to everyone.
