The latest buzz in the insurance industry is going to stir up the online marketplace. Getting insurance is almost always three things:

  • Boring
  • Hard
  • Painful

Filling out forms for insurance, whether it’s car, home, life, health or anything else is not easy. However, it could be set get to get much harder. This is due to the potential change in the law.

Current Law

The consumer is obliged to tell the insurer everything the insurer may want to know when it takes that risk. Well, obviously that places the consumer in the same position as the insurer.
Commissioner David Hertzell.

This means that the consumer is technically always in the guilty position. If the consumer fails to tell the insurer about a particular factor that may have influenced the policy, any claim could be void. There is a huge onus on the consumer to know the required information and to answer with complete and accurate information. Whilst this is a requirement and perhaps a fair one to be truly covered, the proposal is to shake this up even more:

Proposal

The Law Commission wants to end a 103-year-old insurance law that campaigners say has led to thousands of claims being unfairly rejected each year. The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has now given its support to a draft bill for England, Wales and Scotland which is due to be presented to Parliament by the Law Commission next week.

The law would put the onus on the insurer to ask and verify an exahustive list of questions. This should reduce the number of disputed claims and complaints.

Online Forms

The change in law could have a huge impact on online forms. At the best of times, these are complicated and difficult to fill out. What’s going to happen now?

Personalised SEO
The face of Search Engine Optimisation has changed. Rankings will lose their meaning. What has happened? Enforced ” Personalised Search ” from Google.
Now, when you search Google, the results will be different to a colleague sitting next to you. If you both type in the same keyphrase, the results will now be re-ordered depending on your last 180 days of activity. Google have rolled this out worldwide in more than forty languages. Personalised search was previously an opt-in for logged in users with ‘web history’ enabled.  It’s now an opt out – this means that the majority of users will be using it and not even be aware.
How does it work?
Google monitors what sites you click on (via the search results) and increases the ranks of these sites in future searches. So, for example, if you regularly search for and click on moneysupermarket.com Google will make it appear nearer the top of the search results.
What does this mean?
It means that your position in the SERPS (search engine results pages) either matters less or matters more! It’s another tactic similar to the Google Caffeine update that will promote larger, bigger brand sites as these will likely have been searched and clicked on before. The smaller, lower authority sites will therefore get pushed down. So, you should see a promotion of the bigger, high authority sites and a demotion of the smaller, low authority sites.
It also means that SEO work – particularly analysing the search results is going to get harder. It also means a headache for some SEO companies who have to explain this to their clients(!)
What do you think?
Smart move from Google? Invasion of out privacy? Something else? Let us know in the comments below.

Voted one of the most annoying television adverts of the year, it’s difficult to forget GoCompare’s “opera singer” advert and character creation “Gio Compario”. But the Welsh born opera singer – Wynne Evans – and acclaimed opera performer in his own right before the GoCompare advert, has gone into hiding.

Evans, now known by the masses for donning a tux and a long curly moustache rather than his credible operatic performance, has been refusing interviews and publicity calls for fear of a public backlash.

[The Daily Star writes] One pal said: “He’s always proud of the work he does but he’s keeping quiet about this one. The ads are on all the time but not everyone is a big fan! He’s keeping a low profile.” A spokeswoman for Gocompare.com said Wynne “isn’t interested in doing interviews at this time”.

…can you blame him?! For those who are fans of Wynne Evans’ work, you’ll spot him in this “Fans of Jerusalum” video compiled for The Ashes:

We are living in an increasingly price conscious world. So Allerdale Borough Council in Cumbria have taken up the challenge and produced their own ‘GoCompare’ comparison website for their local service charges (as one journalist put it).

The site has been set up by Allerdale Borough Council – Allerdale Compare – so that residents can see how much they’re paying for their public services in comparison to other boroughs across Cumbria. The site compares the fees for a range of public services in the Allerdale, Carlisle, Copeland, South Lakeland, Barrow and Eden boroughs.

Hats off to Allerdale Borough Council for following consumer trends with this new comparison website. No doubt the transparency of this sort of data will also help to bring residents into their borough and perhaps give their house prices a tiny nudge when most needed.

Moneysupermarket (MONY) have released a statement saying that revenue is down 15% below year-earlier levels. This was expected news and the company has done well to keep the market informed.

The results are in line with the Board’s expectations with other figures including an increase of insurance revenues. These were 5% ahead of third-quarter 2008 figures, driven largely by increasing media spend and higher visitor numbers. EBITDA was approximately 5% of the first-half run rate, again due to increase media advertising.

ArgosCompare has launched. The budget retailer has launched it’s own* comparison site with voucher codes as incentives.

It’s another coup in the distribution game for BeatThatQuote who *power the service. Argos are keeping overheads and costs low by taking a standard white label deal from BTQ.

Argos will likely find it tough going in the aggregator market but may be kept alive by their loyal fanbase. BTQ are pushing hard with their affinity partenerships and this should be a good deal for them. Cheap, extra traffic at low cost overheads; BeatThatQuote should be well rehearsed in rebranding now.

analytics-spike

Website owners are always looking to increase traffic. More traffic often means more sales. Whilst it’s important to measure your ROI and not just get traffic for traffic’s sake, there are huge opportunities in forum marketing. We will give you one example that generates tons!

Forums. Wait. Don’t leave yet. The traffic out there is huge!

There is normally an internet forum for most niches. If your business is insurance, there are plenty. If your business is tropical fish, there are also plenty. So, here are six steps to promote your business using internet forums

  1. Identify
Choose the forum that you’re going to participate in. One great resource for this is BigBoards – they provide statistics, broken down by topic that show high traffic forums. Or try, this Google search to find more forums.
  2. Introduce
Be honest, open and helpful. Introduce yourself to become one of the locals. Most forums have strict ethical policies. You can’t just dive in a fill posts with links – you will be banned very, very quickly. So, make an impression with something unique and helpful.
  3. Create a Compelling Profile and Signature
Your signature will appear below each post and each reply. Use this to your advantage to advertise your site and who you are. Add information about yourself and build up your profile page. This helps others know more about you
  4. Don’t Spam
Be courteous and helpful to others. The moneysavingexpert forums are huge. People like Tim Deegan use this to their advantage to offer advice, tips and help on buying beds. Surely you can do the same in your market? But, don’t spam or you will be banned.
  5. Be Brave, Be Helpful
Offer help first. Provide full disclosure and you will find that you become trusted in the forum fairly quickly.
  6. Be Active
This is your industry, you should be passionate about it. So, post replies, create new threads or even just get something off your chest. Build up a rapport with another member that you get on with. Expand your network.

The traffic is out there and if you’re not using forums now. Go ahead, sign up and create a profile. Start contributing to the community and you’ll be amazed at the traffic.

Call to Action: Let us know in the comments how you are getting on with forum marketing.
